LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

LR Question 25 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: When interviewing job candidates, personnel managers not only…

QUESTION TYPE: Flawed Reasoning – Exception

CONCLUSION: Personnel managers shouldn’t ask about hobbies.

REASONING: Enthusiasm about hobbies might mean the candidate will be enthusiastic about work.

But enthusiasm might also mean that a candidate will care more about hobbies than work.

ANALYSIS: This is a pretty bad argument, and hardly needs weakening. The evidence is inconclusive. Enthusiasm could either mean the candidate will be a good worker, or that they won’t.

We only have inconclusive evidence to judge whether it’s a good idea to ask about hobbies.

You can use common sense when evaluating the answers. You know what qualities employers like workers to have.

If asking about hobbies brings out qualities employers like, then it’s a good idea to ask about them.

___________

  1. Personnel managers usually like it when workers will make a long term commitment to stay.
  2. CORRECT. Why would personnel managers want candidates to lie?
  3. Personnel managers like honesty.
  4. Organizational skills are good, they help you get things done in the workplace.
  5. This shows that any restriction might hurt personnel managers’ ability to make decisions.

Recap: The question begins with “When interviewing job candidates, personnel managers not only”. It is a Flawed Reasoning question. Learn how to master LSAT Flaw questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
