LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

LR Question 15 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: It is often said that beauty is subjective. But this…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: Beauty is not subjective.

REASONING: Ancient cultures seem to have had the same ideas of beauty as we do.

ANALYSIS: This sounds like a good argument. But we’ve been greatly influenced by ancient cultures. Our architecture, politics, philosophy, literature, art all bear their influence…why not our idea of beauty?

The wrong answers talk about art. The point of this argument is not art! Art is just a way for us to see what ancient cultures considered beautiful.

We can’t speak with the ancients, so we must look at the evidence they left us of their idea of beauty.

___________

  1. This would strengthen the argument. It means our own artists aren’t influenced by ancient ideas of beauty.
  2. The arts hardly matter. They’re just a visible record ancient cultures left us. We can see what they thought was beautiful.
  3. CORRECT. This shows that we may have simply copied older cultures’ subjective standards of beauty.
  4. Art hardly matters! It was just a way for us to see what ancient people thought was beautiful.
  5. It doesn’t matter who owns art. We’re talking about what people consider beautiful, whether or not they own art.

Recap: The question begins with “It is often said that beauty is subjective But this”. It is a Weaken question. Learn how to master LSAT Weaken questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
