LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

LR Question 2 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The average cable television company offers its customers 50…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: Cable companies will disappear, thanks to new fibre-optic competition from telephone companies.

REASONING: Fiber-optic lines will let telephone companies offer 2-3 times the channels for the same price.

ANALYSIS: This argument assumes that cable companies won’t use the same technology.

The argument also assumes that telephone companies will be able to offer the same quality TV stations and shows.

We can strengthen the argument by eliminating either possibility.

___________

  1. This would weaken the argument, by making it more expensive for telephone companies to gain a new customer.
  2. CORRECT. This shows that telephone companies will be able to offer TV that is at least as good.
  3. This weakens the argument: cable companies will fight back and compete on quality.
  4. I have no idea what effect this will have. Maybe cable companies will avoid letting their telephone companies compete with other cable companies.
  5. This would weaken the argument, by making it more expensive for telephone companies to enter the market.

Recap: The question begins with “The average cable television company offers its customers 50”. It is a Strengthen question. Learn more about LSAT Strengthen questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
