LSAT 106 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q22

LSAT Preptest 106 explanations

RC Question 22 Explanation

DISCUSSION: It’s unusual for this type of question to be the first question, but no matter. There’s no work you can do up front.

Instead, make sure you can confirm your answer using a detail from the text. The wrong answers are there to trick you.

___________

  1. CORRECT. Lines 12-14 say that old movies were made by talented people. Lines 43-47 suggest that new movies aren’t engaging.
  2. Hard to say. There may be talented people in Hollywood today, but they’re no longer making the decisions. Lines 37-39 say that studio executives are in control.

If the wrong people are in charge, even talented staff can’t get much done.
  3. Lines 20-22 suggest that there was no mass media in the 1920s. The media only grew into mass media over time.
  4. We know the films were more interesting. The publicity may always have been garbage.
  5. It isn’t the loss of the star-system that makes modern films bad. The star-system grew into a monstrosity, and now film decisions are made for publicity, rather than for art. See lines 43-47.

Even without the star system, 1920s films might have been good. But modern films are bad because of an excessive focus on publicity. We still have a type of star system, it just grew larger.
