LSAT Preptest 110 explanations

RC Question 5 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Inference questions are sometimes hard. Narrow them down to a couple of answers, they try to see which can be supported based on the passage. You can usually find a specific line to support the right answer.

___________

  1. The first paragraph says most authoritarian rulers only change when they have to. If could still be true that some change even if not pressured, but we’ve got no evidence for that, and plenty of evidence to counter it.
  2. The passage seems to imply that citizens get more dissatisfied as time goes on. See lines 8-12 and 54-56.
  3. Lines 53-56 show that economic success can make a government weaker, because it gives citizens time to think about other values, such as democracy.
  4. CORRECT. That’s why rulers are forced to make changes (we’re told they make changes to hold on to power, lines 5-7). If leaders could hold on to power without making changes, then most would make no changes.
  5. Line 12 says that citizens don’t like concentration of power either.
