LR Question 21 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Kostman’s original painting of Rosati was not a…

QUESTION TYPE: Flawed Parallel Reasoning

CONCLUSION: The reproduction of the painting will not be an accurate reproduction of the painting.

REASONING: The painting was not an accurate reproduction of Rosati.

ANALYSIS: This argument confuses reproducing Rosati and reproducing the flawed portrait of Rosati. It’s perfectly possible to copy a flawed portrait well. The painting would still not be a good portrait of Rosati but it would be a good reproduction of the flawed portrait.

Both the stimulus and the right answer compare irrelevant qualities. It’s possible to copy any portrait or recording, whether the original is good or bad.

___________

  1. CORRECT. You could make a perfect copy of a bad speech. It would have all of the mis-quotes of the original but the sound quality would be good.
  2. This is probably true, but irrelevant. This answer choice isn’t talking about whether it’s possible to reproduce the scene.
  3. This is probably true, but it depends on what is meant by resemble. But this doesn’t talk about whether resemblance is possible.
  4. This is a bad argument. It’s quite possible for people to imitate other people even if they are different. But this doesn’t make the error of comparing irrelevant qualities.
  5. Winning a prestigious award is not the same thing as being enthralling. It’s possible both books are very, very boring. But this doesn’t make the error of comparing irrelevant qualities.
