LR Question 15 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Baking for winter holidays is a tradition that may have…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

ANALYSIS: Cookies help cure depression. Yay! How do they do it? They raise levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. This is the same way some antidepressants work.

And, in mid-winter, lack of sunlight can contribute to depression. That’s about all we know.

___________

  1. Not necessarily. The stimulus doesn’t say cookies always work.
  2. We don’t know how lack of sunlight makes us depressed. The stimulus only says that serotonin makes us happier when we are depressed.
  3. This is tempting, but it doesn’t have to be true. We only know that many people are depressed in mid-winter. It could be that more people are depressed at other times.
  4. CORRECT. Yes. The second to last sentence tells us this. Some anti-depressants act the same way as carbohydrates. And carbohydrates raise serotonin.
  5. If only it were that easy. We could just give everyone cookies. Serotonin improves mood but we don’t know if it curer depression completely.
