LR Question 8 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Vervet monkeys use different alarm calls to warn each other…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Helps to Explain

ANALYSIS: We’re given only one fact: monkeys have a different call for air attacks vs. ground attacks.

On questions with only one fact, be extra wary. There is often a trap.

___________

  1. This wouldn’t explain the air/ground distinction. We have no knowledge of how many attackers come at once by air or by ground.
  2. Like A, this does nothing to explain the two different calls, which are divided by a single factor: land vs. air.
  3. This is tempting. It shows us that ground and air attackers are clearly divided into two groups. But it is not the right answer. It does not explain why a separate alarm call is required for each group.
  4. CORRECT. This is it. If the monkeys have different reactions depending on the direction of the attack, then they need different warning calls. Notice they put this below answer choice C. Make sure to read all of the answers on LR questions!
  5. This wouldn’t explain why the monkeys need to react differently. Even if some air animals eat other animals, both land and air animals eat monkeys. That’s bad for monkeys.

Recap: The question begins with “Vervet monkeys use different alarm calls to warn each other”. It is a Paradox question. Learn more about LSAT Paradox questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
