LR Question 17 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: No small countries and no countries in the southern hemisphere…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

DIAGRAM: SC ➞ S and SH and IP and MD

(If you’re a permanent member of the Security Council, you’re not a small country, you’re not in the southern hemisphere, and you’re in favor of more international peacekeeping and moderation of regional disputes.)

ANALYSIS: The stimulus is almost entirely about the permanent members of the Security Council. We know four things about them, as well as the fact that they are countries. The correct answer will be a combination of some of those factors.

No small countries are on the Security Council, so we know nothing about them. This eliminates A, C and D.

___________

  1. The only thing we know about small countries is that none of them are SC members.
  2. As in A, the only thing we know about SH countries is that they aren’t SC members.
  3. This could be true, but it’s not a must be true. We don’t know which countries are against refugee spending, and we have nothing to indicate they’re on the Security Council.
  4. As in A, we know nothing of small countries.
  5. CORRECT. This is it. Those “some countries” include the five countries on the Security Council, which we know are in favor of moderating disputes and which aren’t in the southern hemisphere.

Recap: The question begins with “No small countries and no countries in the southern hemisphere”. It is a Must be True question. Learn how to master LSAT MBT questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
