LSAT Preptest 5 explanations

LR Question 14 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: A survey of alumni of the class of 1960 at Aurora University…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

PARADOX: Over half of the respondents to a survey indicated that they had been in the top 25% at college.

ANALYSIS: This is a question about sample bias. We have no indication if the entire class of 1960 was sampled. If the sample was non-random, that could explain the results.

___________

  1. CORRECT. It could be that all of the survey takers were telling the truth if high-ranking alumni were the majority of respondents.
  2. This makes things more puzzling. It adds detail but no explanation.
  3. This deepens the mystery. Fewer potential high ranking alumni could have answered.
  4. If the survey sampled almost the entire class then the students must have been mistaken. This answer choice restricts the possibilities, but adds no explanation.
  5. As long as there was still a ranking system it would be possible to create an ordered list of alumni rank. This explains nothing.

Recap: The question begins with “A survey of alumni of the class of 1960 at Aurora University”. It is a Paradox question. Learn more about LSAT Paradox questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
