LR Question 23 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: There are about 75 brands of microwave popcorn on the market…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

ANALYSIS: A key detail here is that microwaveable popcorn accounts for just over half of popcorn sales. The other important detail is that microwaveable popcorn costs much more by weight.

The fact that there are 75 brands isn’t useful and is only there to trick us. There are probably 7800 types of soft drinks on sale but it doesn’t change the fact that Pepsi and coke are by far the most important.

___________

  1. It could be. Just because there are 75 brands doesn’t mean that Orville Redenbacher isn’t the dominant brand (for example).
  2. Not necessary. What about microwaveable soups? There could be many more of those: the stimulus tells us nothing about other foods.
  3. Microwaveable popcorn accounts for about half of popcorn sales revenues. Yet it costs much more per pound. That means that less microwaveable popcorn is sold by weight.
  4. CORRECT. Yes. Since a bit more than half of money is spent on microwaveable popcorn (which takes three minutes to cook) this has to be true.
  5. We have no idea. The stimulus tells us nothing about other microwaveable foods.

Recap: The question begins with “There are about 75 brands of microwave popcorn on the market”. It is a Must be True question. Learn how to master LSAT MBT questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
