LSAT Preptest 5 explanations

LR Question 24 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: There are about 75 brands of microwave popcorn on the market…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: People are willing to pay a higher price for popcorn in exchange for convenience

REASONING: Microwaveable popcorn is five times as expensive by weight as conventional popcorn.

ANALYSIS: There could be some other reason apart from convenience that causes people to prefer microwaveable popcorn. Or perhaps they don’t realize that it’s actually more expensive.

The conclusion to weaken is that people buy microwaveable popcorn for its convenience. All of the wrong answers provide interesting information but tell us nothing about why people buy popcorn.

___________

  1. This doesn’t tell us about the motives of people who do buy microwave popcorn.
  2. CORRECT. This provides an alternate reason apart from convenience. People trade money for perceived health.
  3. This tells us why popcorn is expensive but not why people buy it.
  4. This shows that the two popcorns are equal in this respect. But it doesn’t explain why people buy microwaveable popcorn…
  5. This explains why microwaveable popcorn is heavier but not why people buy it.
