LR Question 10 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Economist: If the belief were to become widespread…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Strongly Supported

FACTS:

  1. If people believe you lose jobs due to luck, then there will be demands for the government to protect people from bad luck.
  2. This belief about job loss being due to bad luck is correct.
  3. Government protection from bad luck will be bad for the economy.

ANALYSIS: I changed “societal forces” to “bad luck”. I do this sometimes to make the explanations simpler, and also as an example of the kinds of conceptual changes that don’t matter and that you’re allowed to make when thinking about LSAT questions.

Basically the facts combine to say that if people develop this true belief about luck then it will cause economic problems.

___________

  1. CORRECT. The stimulus said: job loss is mostly caused by societal forces (bad luck). But if people develop this true belief, then they will demand economic protections that will hurt the economy.
    So this answer is supported.
  2. The stimulus didn’t say if there was any way to protect against societal forces.
  3. The stimulus didn’t say this. It said the government shouldn’t adopt extensive control of the economy. But it’s possible that lighter control is fine.
  4. The stimulus didn’t say this. It said that if people became aware of the causes of job loss then they would want protection. But the stimulus didn’t say that people are becoming aware of the causes of job loss.
  5. Military invasions were just an example of something the government already protects us from. The stimulus never talked about what’s responsible for military invasions.
