DISCUSSION: There’s no preparation for this type of question. Just try to confirm the answer you choose using the passage. If you can’t do this quickly, then you need to work on building a mental map of the passage so that you can quickly find specific information without stress.
___________
- This was the most tempting answer, because I knew the author thought the Charter wasn’t strong enough.
However, this answer is an extremely strongly worded criticism. We’d need actual evidence to conclude the author thinks this. I scanned paragraph 1: while the author thinks the Charter could be stronger, they never say that it’s completely useless. - Lines 45-47 and 50-53 contradict this answer. The author would disagree with this; they like the UDHR.
- The second paragraph contradicts this. Line 34 says the articles were extensively debated.
- If this were true, then the author would have mentioned it in the final paragraph, when they discuss the weaknesses of the UDHR. But the author didn’t list this as a weakness.
- CORRECT. The proponents are the people listed on line 20 who called for a legally binding document. These proposals led to the UDHR.
Lines 45-49 say that the weakness of the UDHR is that it isn’t legally binding. So if it were legally binding it would better match the intentions of the original proponents.
