LR Question 10 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Richard: Because it fails to meet the fundamental…

QUESTION TYPE: Point at Issue

ARGUMENTS:

Richard argues that abstract art will fail because it isn’t representational, and the main requirement of art is that it represents.

Jung-Su says that abstract art does represent the formal features of objects, and is therefore mainstream.

ANALYSIS: On point at issue questions, you must choose something that:

  • Both people talk about.
  • One says ‘yes’, the other says ‘no’.

Most answers fail the first test. You have to be able to point to the author’s opinion to choose an answer.

In this case, Richard thinks that abstract art is not representational and therefore not mainstream. Jung-Su thinks that abstract art is representational and therefore mainstream.

___________

  1. Richard agrees with this. Jung-Su, in their first sentence, also agrees with this.
  2. Richard agrees with this. Jung-Su appears to agree as well, because their argument is that abstract art does in fact represent.
  3. Richard has nothing to say about musicians.
  4. This is a trap answer. Jung-Su does not disagree with Richard about this. Jung-Su likes abstract art, but they may think that others will see it as an aberration. In their last sentence, they say: “whatever others might come to say”.
  5. CORRECT. See the analysis above. Richard says abstract art isn’t representational. Jung-Su says that abstract art does represent the formal features of objects.
