LSAT 148 | Section 4 | Logical Reasoning: Q2

LSAT Preptest 148 explanations

LR Question 2 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Bell: Commentators in the media are wrong to criticize…

QUESTION TYPE: Point at Issue

ARGUMENTS: Bell says commentators are wrong to criticize Klein’s policies: those policies were necessary. Klein is the person we should want to make decisions in the future, even though Klein’s policies were unpopular.

Soltan counters that future decisions need political support. Klein has little support, so she should step down, even though her policies were effective.

ANALYSIS: There are a few points raised in this stimulus:

  1. Is Klein popular?
  2. Were Klein’s policies effective?
  3. Should Klein be our leader?

Both Bell and Soltan agree that Klein is unpopular but her policies were effective. They disagree on the third point: Bell thinks we need leaders like Klein, Soltan thinks Klein should step down.

Note that for an answer to be correct, both people must give their opinion about it, and their opinions must be opposite.

___________

  1. Both Bell and Soltan agree that Klein’s policies have been effective. Soltan says so in their first sentence.
  2. Both people seem to agree that Klein’s policies were unpopular. Bell says so in sentence two, and Soltan’s comment about a lack of political support suggests they also think Klein’s policies were unpopular.
  3. CORRECT. Bell says Klein should make decisions in the future. Soltan says Klein should step down.
  4. Both Bell and Soltan say there are important decisions to be made in the future.
  5. Only Bell mentions impending catastrophe. We don’t know what Soltan thinks.
