LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Advertisement: Most nutritionists recommend eating fish…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: People who want to eat fish for health but not taste should eat Tilapia fillets.

REASONING: Tilapia fillets don’t have the fishy taste that some dislike.

ANALYSIS: It’s true thats nutritionists recommend fish twice per week. The author has correctly shown that Tilapia lack one negative of regular fish. But, they don’t tell us anything else about Tilapia. There are two ways to weaken this argument:

  • Show some other problem with Tilapia. Maybe they have a disagreeable fish texture. Or maybe they have a lot of mercury or something deadly.
  • Show that Tilapia lack benefits of other fish. Maybe the nutritious essence of fish only exists if you have a fishy smell, for example?

___________

  1. So? The advertisement wasn’t saying to eat more than the recommended amount of fish. They just said Tilapia can be a good replacement for the usual two servings of fish.
  2. All the more reason to eat Tilapia! If there are too many Tilapia, then fishing them to eat them solves two problems at once.
  3. CORRECT. If this is true, then Tilapia aren’t a good replacement for fish in your diet. Tilapia lack the essential fish oil that make other fish healthy to eat.
  4. So? This doesn’t contradict the fact that nutritionists say we should eat fish. And if you do want to follow that advice, the advertisement is suggesting Tilapia are a good way to do it.
  5. This answer….seems true. But you’re not looking for something true. You’re looking to weaken the argument! This answer instead strengthens the argument by showing that fishy taste is indeed a reason people avoid eating fish. So Tilapia may work for these people.
