LSAT 2 | Section 2 | Logical Reasoning: Q10

LSAT Preptest 2 explanations

LR Question 10 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Advertisers are often criticized for their unscrupulous…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: Advertisers sometimes act for moral as well as financial considerations.

REASONING: When a family newspaper switched to focusing on sex and violence many advertisers left. The argument concluded that they must have done so for moral reasons.

ANALYSIS: There are many other reasons the advertisers might have left. For instance, advertisers selling family related products might believe that a sex and violence newspaper would not let them get many sales.

As an aside: have you ever heard of a family newspaper switching abruptly to…sex and violence? The LSAT normally isn’t this weird.

___________

  1. This sounds tempting. But if the advertisers sold family products, they may have thought it made the most sense to go to another family newspaper i.e. The switch was for business reasons not moral reasons.
  2. That certainly doesn’t help us conclude that the advertisers were acting for moral reasons. The advertisers switched to the “immoral” newspaper.
  3. CORRECT. This shows that the advertisers left despite a financial loss. Therefore they must have been acting for some other reason, perhaps morality.
  4. This could lead advertisers to change papers for financial reasons if they were targeting the family demographic.
  5. This would provide a financial reason to change, if advertisers were targeting a particular income group that reads family newspapers.

Recap: The question begins with “Advertisers are often criticized for their unscrupulous”. It is a Strengthen question. Learn more about LSAT Strengthen questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
