DISCUSSION: Paragraphs two and three show that the author thinks Pan-Indianism is incorrect. There’s no evidence for Pan-Indianism’s major assumption (lines 39-40), and there’s evidence to contradict the theory (lines 20-22).
___________
- No one mentioned political motives.
- Only the author mentioned cultural borrowing.
(lines 47-48) - Pan-Indianism predicts tribal culture will disappear. This answer is nonsense.
- Pan-Indian theorists never said whether assimilation was a good thing. They just said it would happen.
- CORRECT. I would have preferred that the right answer be more critical. The author doesn’t think that Pan-Indianism offers even a partial explanation.
Nonetheless, it’s certainly true that the author doesn’t think Pan-Indianism explains the changes in Native societies. And lines 27-29 can be interpreted to support the idea that the author thinks Pan-Indianism is wrong but not completely wrong.
