DISCUSSION: Staves mentions judicial decisions on lines 41-44. The judges used pre-1660 assumptions. Pre-1660 assumptions were that a husband controlled his wife’s property (lines 1-2).
Note that this is the only question which asked about paragraph two.
___________
- Staves never went this far. She just said that judges’ interpretations of the law were unfavorable to women.
- This describes eighteenth century historians, not judges (lines 38-41).
- CORRECT. Lines 41-44 say this directly.
- Paragraph two, taken as a whole, show that judicial decisions had an enormous effect on women’s marriage rights. Line 13 says that Staves’ evidence comes from court cases.
- Lines 41-44 contradict this. Pre-1660 assumptions were that a husband controlled his wife’s property (lines 1-2).
