LR Question 5 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Maurice’s attempted refutation of Jane’s argument is…

QUESTION TYPE: Flawed Reasoning

CONCLUSION: Maurice thinks that TV and movie violence doesn’t cause violence.

REASONING: Teens have been violent for a long time.

ANALYSIS: Maurice misunderstands Jane. She isn’t saying there was no violence before TV. She’s saying that TV increased violence.

___________

  1. Maurice never says whether censorship would be popular.
  2. Maurice didn’t talk about what was morally permissible.
  3. CORRECT. TV violence could increase modern violence, even if teenagers always were somewhat violence. It’s just like junk food can make us fat, even though people got fat before junk food.
  4. Actually, it’s pretty easy to check if teenagers were ever violent before TV. We can look at  historical documents about wars, or read old novels.
  5. Violence is clear: an aggressive and physically dangerous act committed against another.
