LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The water of Lake Laberge, in Canada, currently contains…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

ANALYSIS: Why do we detect toxaphene, even though it was banned? The paradox could be resolved either by showing a source still exists, or that it can linger for a long time in the environment.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This helps explain. The toxaphene in the lake could have been put there before the ban.
  2. This shows the area is polluted, but it doesn’t explain toxaphene’s presence long after it was banned.
  3. This would actually eliminate a possible explanation (the toxaphene traveled from an area where it wasn’t banned). This makes its presence harder to explain.
  4. Nonetheless, the ban occurred. This would only be helpful if there was evidence they decided to disobey the ban they opposed.
  5. The toxin was detected in the water, not fish. This doesn’t help.
