LSAT Preptest 127 explanations

LR Question 11 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Studies have shown that the more high-stress points a bridge…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

PARADOX: High stress points make bridges more likely to fracture. Yet the fractures tend not to occur at high stress points.

ANALYSIS: This seems fairly simple to explain. The stress points weaken the structure, but the actual breaks occur elsewhere for some reason. The right answer will give us a reason.

___________

  1. This shows the phenomenon is common, but doesn’t help us explain why this occurs.
  2. CORRECT. Perfect, this explains why the fractures don’t occur where we would expect them to.
  3. This doesn’t explain why the fractures don’t occur at those points.
  4. Again, this doesn’t explain why structures with stress points fracture the way they do.
  5. As in A, C and D, this offers no explanation. It only tells us one reason why stress points could occur.

Recap: The question begins with “Studies have shown that the more high-stress points a bridge”. It is a Paradox question. Learn how to master LSAT Paradox questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
