LR Question 25 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Literary critic: A folktale is a traditional…

QUESTION TYPE: Sufficient Assumption

CONCLUSION: Folktales can have deeper meaning.

REASONING: Folktales have the wisdom of the culture.

ANALYSIS: On sufficient assumption questions, you must connect the evidence to the conclusion.

We know folktales carry the wisdom of culture. We want to prove they have deeper meaning:

Wisdom ➞ Deeper meaning

That statement links the two ideas. We get:

Folktales ➞ Wisdom ➞ Deeper Meaning
___________

  1. This doesn’t help us prove that such tales have deep meaning.
  2. CORRECT. Folktales let us learn about the wisdom of cultures. This tells us that they therefore have deeper meaning.
    See the diagram above.
  3. We don’t care about tales that lack deep meaning. We want to prove that folktales do have deeper meaning.
  4. This tells us about tales that have deep meaning. That’s not helpful, because we don’t know if folk tales have deep meaning. We’re trying to prove that they do!
  5. This tells us that folktales could have deeper meaning. We must prove that they definitely do.
