LSAT Preptest 139 explanations

LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Scientists generally believe that no deep-sea creature…

QUESTION TYPE: Identify The Conclusion

CONCLUSION: Scientists should reassess the view that no deep sea creatures can detect red light.

REASONING: There is a deep sea creature that has red lights that probably act as lures.

ANALYSIS: Identifying conclusions is a very important part of arguments.

Anytime the author gives a recommendation (should, need to, ought to), that’s almost certainly the conclusion. Especially here, where ‘need to’ comes after ‘but’, a word that indicates the author’s own opinion.

___________

  1. This is evidence that scientists ought to change their opinion.
  2. This is evidence that those red lights are lures.
  3. This is just a fact. For this to be the conclusion, the whole argument would have had to be devoted to proving that this creature had been discovered.
  4. This is a belief that the author argues is mistaken.
  5. CORRECT. The red light lures are evidence that some deep sea creatures can see red light.
