LR Question 22 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Jim: I hear that the company is considering giving …

QUESTION TYPE: Principle – Justify

ARGUMENTS: JIM’S ARGUMENT: It would be unfair to raise Fred and Dorothy’s salaries above mine unless mine also increased, because I’ve worked here longer.

TASHA’S ARGUMENT: It would be unfair to raise Jim’s salary without also raising the salaries of the employees who have worked here as long as him and earn the same as him.

ANALYSIS: Both of them think it’s unfair to pay one person more than another person unless they’ve worked there longer than them.

___________

  1. This is about identical duties. Nobody talks about duties.
  2. This is about experience in the field, not time at this company.
  3. Always paying the longer-serving employee more is too strong. Jim only says Fred and Dorothy shouldn’t make more than him. He doesn’t demand that he always make more than them. Also, Tasha doesn’t say Jim must make more than the other 35 employees.
  4. CORRECT. Fred and Dorothy haven’t worked there longer than Jim, so they shouldn’t earn more than him. Jim hasn’t worked there longer than the other 35 employees, so he shouldn’t earn more than them.
  5. This is about hours worked per day. Completely irrelevant.
