LR Question 3 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The local fair held its annual photography contest …

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox – EXCEPT

PARADOX: Both amateurs and professionals entered the contest. Somehow, most of the prizes were won by amateurs.

ANALYSIS: You’d expect professionals to win a contest over amateurs.

The four wrong answers will explain why most of the prizes were won by amateurs. Maybe way more amateurs entered the contest, or the judges felt bad for the amateurs and chose them instead.

The correct answer won’t help explain this paradox.

___________

  1. This would explain the result. If amateurs submit way more photos, they have more chances to win prizes.
  2. Also explains. If the judges are biased toward amateur photographers, amateurs would be more likely to win.
  3. Also explains. The amateurs may have submitted stronger entries than the professionals.
  4. Also explains. If there are simply more prize categories available to amateurs, they’d naturally have more opportunities to win prizes.
  5. CORRECT. This compares this year’s amateurs to previous years, but it doesn’t help us determine anything about why amateurs won most of the prizes this year.
