LR Question 3 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Nutritionist: A study revealed that …

QUESTION TYPE: Most Strongly Supported

FACTS:

  1. Most adults thought their diets matched guidelines, but they actually didn’t.
  2. Both men and women underestimated fat intake and overestimated most other foods.
  3. Women fell short in most food categories, especially fruits and veggies.
  4. Men:
    underestimated fat intake by half
    met recommendations only for breads
    * fell short in all other categories

ANALYSIS: They give us some facts about food intake and then split it into men and women. So we can infer that they want us to conclude something about a similarity or difference between men and women.

What do we know about women specifically? They fell short in most food categories, including fruits and veggies.

Do we know something about fruits and veggies for men? Not explicitly.

But we are told that men fell short in all categories except for breads. So if they fell short in all other categories, they necessarily fell short in fruits and veggies.

So both men and women fell short in fruits and veggies!

___________

  1. We know most adults misjudged their diets generally, but we aren’t told they were wrong in every single category. That’s too strong.
  2. The stimulus never compares men’s and women’s awareness. In fact, it generally suggests both groups were poor judges of their diets.
  3. The stimulus says nothing about anyone’s knowledge of the recommendations themselves. It discusses actual consumption and estimates of their own diets.
  4. The stimulus says both men and women overestimated their intake of most foods. This answer says the exact opposite.
  5. CORRECT. The stimulus says men met recommendations only for breads and fell short in all other categories. Fruits and vegetables are among those other categories, so this follows directly.
