LR Question 5 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Studies reveal that most people select the foods they eat

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: Health experts should encourage people to eat healthy foods by mentioning how flavorful those foods are.

REASONING: People choose foods based on flavor, not nutrition.

ANALYSIS: The main problem with this argument is that people might not like the flavor of wholesome foods. This argument is assuming that people are simply unaware that wholesome foods taste good.

We can strengthen this argument by saying that people would like the taste of wholesome foods if they tried them.

A second possible flaw is that flavorful might not necessarily mean good flavor. Broccoli has a very distinct flavor, but personally I can’t stand the stuff.

___________

  1. This weakens the argument. People already believe that wholesome foods are flavorful, yet still avoid them.
  2. This just repeats what we already knew: people choose foods based on flavor, not nutrition.
  3. This weakens the argument. If emphasizing nutrition is working, that reduces the necessity of changing strategies.
  4. This strongly weakens the argument. People already think that nutritious foods are less flavorful. So if nutritionists emphasize flavor then people will choose unhealthy foods.
  5. CORRECT. This shows that people may try new, nutritious foods if those foods are described as flavorful.
This won’t work for foods that people have already tried, but it at least suggests health experts can make people try new healthy foods.
