LSAT 103 | Section 3 | Logical Reasoning: Q12

LSAT Preptest 103 explanations

LR Question 12 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The Levant-the area that borders the eastern Mediterranean – was…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be False

FACTS:

  1. Many people used to live in the Levant.
  2. About 6,000 years ago, people left the southern Levant.
  3. People stayed in the Northern Levant.
  4. Some archaeologists think that deforestation caused an economic crisis, which led to the migration.

ANALYSIS: Note that the question stem asks you to assume that the archaeologists are right. So deforestation did cause the population collapse.

___________

  1. This could be true: it might explain the deforestation. Animals ate too many young trees.
  2. This would also explain how deforestation happened. People cut down too many trees to make lime plaster.
  3. This shows that the northern Levant kept its forests. It explains why there was no population collapse there.
  4. CORRECT. This contradicts the archaeologists. You can’t have deforestation if there never were any forests in the first place.
  5. If you build houses out of wood, you have to cut down forests.
