LSAT 144 | Section 1 | Reading Comprehension: Q13

LSAT Preptest 144 explanations

RC Question 13 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Suppose a university researcher wants to…

DISCUSSION: The third paragraph gives the author’s views on use of patented materials in basic research. The author thinks that this will be allowed, because companies won’t want to sue (lines 47-51) or possibly won’t be able to win if they do sue (lines 51-54).

___________

  1. The author disagrees with this. Lines 47-54 say that companies likely won’t be able to sue against basic research. And if you can’t sue, then you have no power to demand a licensing agreement.
  2. Same as B. The author says in lines 47-54 that companies won’t sue against basic research because it’s too expensive and they won’t win.
  3. The passage said nothing about what research universities will or won’t allow.
  4. CORRECT. Lines 51-54 directly support this.
  5. This wasn’t in the passage. The author didn’t mention when or why corporations conduct basic research.
