LSAT Preptest 149 explanations

RC Question 24 Explanation

DISCUSSION: This question asked about Gilman’s beliefs: what did she think would be a factor in the evolution of society?

You should be able to prove the answer with the passage. All the wrong answers aren’t mentioned in the passage and are intended to distract. Whereas the correct answer is directly supported by specific lines.

___________

  1. Reclamation means acceptance and getting something back. So reclamation of ancient theories would be going back to old ways. Whereas Gilman’s theories argued we should change society with new ideas. To change society in this was is to reject old theories.
  2. Other cultures aren’t mentioned.

(Fun fact from Gilman’s wiki: she was an Anglo-Saxon supremacist and thought immigrants were diluting America’s racial purity)
  3. Gilman wrote books, but she didn’t make any argument about literacy.
  4. CORRECT. The second half of the second paragraph covers this. Occupations are part of social evolution and we have an obligation to find one that suits us and can benefit society. (lines 33-38)
  5. Maybe I missed it, but I don’t think “dialectical” is in the passage. This is a distractor answer that uses a fancy word you may associate with “theory”.
