LSAT Preptest 102 explanations

LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Advances in photocopying technology allow criminals…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: We should choose the more expensive anti-counterfeiting technique, because it is more effective.

REASONING: No reasoning is given to support this choice over the less expensive, less effective version.

ANALYSIS: This isn’t a good argument. We don’t know how expensive the special ink is, or how big a problem counterfeiting is.

It doesn’t always make sense to buy the best.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This provides a lot of support. Micro-filtering costs less than ink. But society ends up paying more, because they have to pay experts, or suffer harm.
  2. This tells us how to make a technique effective. It doesn’t tell us which technique to choose.
  3. It doesn’t matter how many steps there are. We only care what the steps cost.
  4. We don’t care about the past. We care about how things work in the present, when photocopying technology does exist.
  5. So? As long as many criminals can access photocopiers, counterfeiting will be a problem.

Recap: The question begins with “Advances in photocopying technology allow criminals”. It is a Strengthen question. Learn more about LSAT Strengthen questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
