LR Question 6 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Monarch butterflies spend the winter hibernating on…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Helpful to Know

CONCLUSION: The tour groups will kill monarchs.

REASONING: The tours groups kill the small shrubs that monarch butterflies which fall off trees need to survive.

ANALYSIS: It’s very easy to miss the part that says only monarchs that fall off trees need the shrubs.

We need to know how many monarchs fall off trees and need the shrubs.

Three of the wrong answers don’t even mention tourists or shrubs. That doesn’t let us judge whether tourists will hurt the monarchs.

___________

  1. This would help us know how endangered the monarchs are. But it doesn’t say whether tour groups are a problem.
  2. Same as A.
  3. Is this non-necessary plant life valuable to monarchs? We’d need to know that to know if this answer choice is of any use. (Something can be valuable, but not necessary).
  4. Same as A and B. This tells us nothing about tourists.
  5. CORRECT. If only 0.0001% of monarchs fall off trees, then the shrubs aren’t a big loss.

Recap: The question begins with “Monarch butterflies spend the winter hibernating on”. It is a Paradox question. Learn more about LSAT Paradox questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
