LSAT 138 | Section 2 | Logical Reasoning: Q19

LSAT Preptest 138 explanations

LR Question 19 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Research into artificial intelligence will fail to…

QUESTION TYPE: Identify The Conclusion

CONCLUSION: AI won’t produce true intelligence unless it radically changes focus.

REASONING: Right now AI only focusses on computation and ignores emotional and non-cognitive intelligence.

ANALYSIS: This says that unless AI changes focus, it will just make ‘intelligent’ machines that lack even basic emotional intelligence.

The first sentence is often the conclusion if there are no conclusion indicator words. In this argument, all the other sentences support the first sentence.

___________

  1. This is true, and it supports the first sentence, which is the conclusion. Because the current focus has this effect, AI won’t produce true intelligence unless it changes focus.
  2. CORRECT. This paraphrases the first sentence. Every other sentence supports this conclusion.
  3. Totally irrelevant. We have no idea what AI’s objectives are.
  4. We have no idea which is more important. We just know that true intelligence requires both.
  5. This is true, and it supports the conclusion. AI won’t produce true intelligence unless it changes.
