LSAT 138 | Section 1 | Reading Comprehension: Q13

LSAT Preptest 138 explanations

RC Question 13 Explanation

DISCUSSION: On most strongly supported questions, look for lines in the passage that support your answer.

Many wrong answers use elements from the passage out of context to confuse you.

___________

  1. CORRECT. The second sentence of paragraph 2 says secondary substances continue to appear, due to genetic mutations.
  2. The last sentence of paragraph 1 says that secondary substances give plants their taste and smell. It’s possible a single secondary substance could fulfil both rules, the passage never says this can’t happen.
  3. This simply isn’t mentioned in the passage. If you chose this, you must learn to support your answer in the passage before choosing it. With practice, you’ll be able to locate relevant lines quickly.
  4. Paragraph 1 says only a few secondary substances occur in each species. So the variety is small. However, we don’t know if any species only has one secondary substance. Maybe all plants have at least 2-3.
  5. The word regulator is never mentioned in the passage. This is a nonsense answer. Secondary substances protect plants, but they don’t assist in primary substances role, as far as we know.
