LR Question 6 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Three major laundry detergent manufacturers have…

QUESTION TYPE: Strengthen

CONCLUSION: The analysts conclude that bulky detergents will soon disappear from the market.

REASONING: The three largest detergent manufacturers who control 80% of the market are eliminating bulky detergents.

ANALYSIS: This isn’t a perfect argument. We could strengthen it by showing that other manufacturers will also stop producing bulky detergent. Or we could show that people are willing to buy the new compact detergent.

___________

  1. If people only buy the bulky detergents then the small companies will simply gain market share. This weakens the argument. Smaller manufacturers will keep producing the old bulky detergent.
  2. This weakens the argument. Consumers are wary of the new product.
  3. This weakens the argument. If consumers figure this out they may seek out the cheaper bulky detergents.
  4. This weakens the argument. Manufacturers will not be able to save on shelving costs.
  5. CORRECT. This shows that at least some consumers will be eager to buy the new detergent.
