LSAT Preptest 139 explanations

RC Question 10 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Gould’s research is described on lines 26-29 and lines 58-64. Before answering this question, you should read over those two areas to get all the information on Gould. That will let you more easily recognize the right answer.

___________

  1. This answer is a weird mishmash of ideas. Gould said:

    • Bees don’t need odor (lines 26-29). This applies to all cases.
    • In some cases, honeybees will refuse foragers’ instructions if the instructions tell the bees to go to a place flowers wouldn’t normally grow.

This answer just merges those two facts into a weird Frankenstein’s answer: “no odor = I’ll go where I want! I’m a strong, independent bee!”

That’s not at all what Gould said. If you were tempted by this answer, you should reread the relevant lines of the passage before looking at answer choices.

  2. This is a trap. Lines 58-64 say that the foragers did go to the boat. It was their nestmates who refused to go.
  3. Gould didn’t mention experienced vs. non-experienced foragers. In fact I don’t believe either passage made this distinction anywhere.
  4. CORRECT. This is supported by the information in both passages. Lines 26-29 show that foragers can send bees to sites the forager has not visited. And lines 58-64 show that the bees wouldn’t follow the foragers’ instructions to go to the boat, even though the forager had been to the boat.
  5. It is ants that leave trails. This answer is trying to confuse you by referencing line 36.
