LSAT 136 | Section 1 | Reading Comprehension: Q20

LSAT Preptest 136 explanations

RC Question 20 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The author seemed to like Jazz. They thought it was innovative and they approved of the novel’s jazzlike narrative style.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This answer talks about African-American music.
However, the author seems to think that Morrison’s book was an even more interesting contribution to North American art than African-American music was. So this quote is off base.
  2. This has to do with the novel’s narrative structure, the main focus of the passage.
  3. This describes the interaction between the narrator and the individual characters, much like the interaction between Ellington’s ensemble and the soloists.
  4. This shows how the narrative style of Morrison’s book is like a jazz ensemble.
  5. This shows that Morrison used a jazzlike style in her narration and combined it with her skillful writing abilities, making a great book.

I don’t understand your explanation. This question is asking for the author’s attitude toward the novel Jazz EXCEPT…
Your explanation looks like the opposite way.

Not sure I follow. In A, the answer says that Jazz music was the greatest contribution African-Americans made to America’s culture. But the author’s opinion is that Morrison’s book contributed more than jazz music. So this answer DOESN’T fit with the author’s opinion, which is what we’re looking for on an except question.

All of the other answers do match the author’s opinion.

Note: This is an old comment but I wanted to clarify the point.

I scored very well on this section, but missed this layup question because I thought, “returning to the passage for each of these answers will take too much time”. Shame on me!
