LR Question 20 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: In Brazil, side-by-side comparisons of Africanized…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken – Exception

CONCLUSION: Africanized honeybees will not cause a decline in commercial honey production if they displace local honeybees in the United States.

REASONING: In Brazil, Africanized honeybees are superior producers of honey.

ANALYSIS: There are many differences between Brazil and the United States that might make this comparison useless. The climate is different, native bees may be different, the people are different, plants are different, etc.

Remember that the conclusion is only about commercial honey production. The right answer shows a problem that could occur if Africanized honeybees were introduced, but it is not a problem related to honey.

___________

  1. This makes the comparison to Brazilian bees meaningless. Perhaps Africanized honeybees are better than Brazilian bees but worse than American bees.
  2. This shows that even if Africanized bees are better at producing honey they may make it more difficult overall to produce commercial honey.
  3. CORRECT. This sounds like a problem but it isn’t a problem related to commercial honey production. It doesn’t weaken the conclusion.
  4. This shows that commercial production could decline. If many beekeepers cease production then it won’t matter if Africanized bees are better.
  5. This shows that Africanized bees are much less likely to be superior in the United States than in Brazil.
