LSAT 33 Explanations

LR Question 14 Explanation, by LSATHacks

QUESTION TEXT: After the United Nations Security Council authorized…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

FACTS: Parliament supported the UN plan yet condemned their own prime minister for promising to commit military personnel to help the plan.

ANALYSIS: Both parliament and the prime minister liked the UN plan. That is why parliament’s condemnation of the prime minister was surprising. If they agree then why are they angry with him?

The correct answer explains that only parliament has the authority to send soldier off to war. The prime minister broke the law.

___________

  1. Presumably the government of a country can commit its armed forces, even if the UN can’t. This doesn’t explain why parliament condemned the prime minister.
  2. CORRECT. This means that the Prime Minister was outside of his jurisdiction. He tried to do something that only parliament could do and they got angry about it.
  3. Parliament approved the plan, so presumably they also approved of spending money on it. This doesn’t explain why they condemned the prime minister.
  4. The public doesn’t matter. The dispute is between parliament and the prime minister.
  5. The parliament and the prime minister both supported the plan.
