LSAT Preptest 109 explanations

LR Question 9 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The same task triggers different levels of awareness of…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Strongly Supported

FACTS:

  1. The same activity can either increase or decrease people’s environmental awareness.
  2. Some people have decreased awareness during a math problem because they visualize it in their heads.
  3. Others have increased awareness because their brain is signaling rest at the end of each stage of problem solving.

ANALYSIS: As a side note, I think this type of visualization is highly relevant to logic games as well as math. Visualizers often have an easier time.

The main takeaway here is that people have different reactions to math problems. Visualizers are less aware of their surroundings and other people are more aware.

___________

  1. CORRECT. The group that visualizes does not have increased environmental awareness when solving a math problem. They have decreased awareness.
  2. Actually people who visually solve problems are less aware of their surroundings. They’re focusing on what they see in their heads.
  3. It depends on the type of person. Math generally makes visualizers less aware and non-visualizers more aware.
  4. Actually it is the non-visualizers who become more aware of their surroundings during rest periods. Visualizers seem oblivious to their surroundings throughout.
  5. This is only true of non-visualizers. Visualizers stay focused on their mind’s eye until the problem is solved.
