LR Question 8 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Few animals brave the midday heat of the Sahara desert…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox – Exception

FACTS: Unlike other animals the silver ant often goes out into the midday heat of the Sahara. It eats animals that died of heat. The silver ant can fall victim to heat as well.

ANALYSIS: It seems likely that silver ants aren’t at much risk from the heat, even if they can die from it.

That’s one explanation. The wrong answer choices provide other explanations. They either show an advantage to being outside during midday or a disadvantage to staying out in the sun.

The correct answer does show how ants deal with heat. But it doesn’t explain why the ants would choose to go outside during the hottest, most dangerous part of the day.

___________

  1. This shows that the ants may actually face less risk at midday since nothing will eat them then.
  2. This shows that it is easier to navigate during the midday sun.
  3. This shows that food is most plentiful during the midday sun.
  4. This shows that the ants actually face less heat during the midday sun if they leave their nests.
  5. CORRECT. This shows a way that the ants can avoid dying from excess heat. But surely all animals in the Sahara have a way of coping from the heat. Yet they stay in the shade the sun at midday. This doesn’t explain why the ants go out during the hottest hours.
