- There’s no long standing controversy. Historians used to agree that contractual changes helped women (lines 5-8). Staves makes a new argument that challenges this consensus.
- Staves’ suggests that the old hypothesis should be reevaluated. She presents a new hypothesis.
- Staves attacks the traditional theory that was presented in lines 5-8.
