LSAT 110 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q22

LSAT Preptest 110 explanations

RC Question 22 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The correct answer must encompass the entire passage. It explains how rice was introduced, why it was cultivated during slavery, and why rice was still cultivated after slavery.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This covers the entire timeframe. An essay with this title will probably say many things about rice, including why rice was grown (as in this passage).
  2. We don’t know much about the effect rice had on the economy.
  3. This ignores the second paragraph, which discusses rice cultivation under slavery.
  4. This is too general, it ignores rice, which was the focus of the passage.
The first lines just give context that highlights the importance of Vernon’s research. They aren’t the main point: Vernon’s research is.
  5. This ignores the second paragraph, when African Americans were slaves, not tenant farmers. And we’re not told much about the wider economy.
