LSAT Preptest 115 explanations

RC Question 5 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Designed offal means reusing waste from manufacturing process. The reuse is planned. You know a process will produce a certain by-product, so you design another process to reuse the by-product.

The offal comes from the manufacturer’s own process. Many of the wrong answer choices are just recycling, or buying outside waste to use. The waste has to come from a manufacturing process.

___________

  1. This is just use of recycled raw materials. There is no evidence the manufacturer avoids waste in its own processes.
  2. This is a clever reuse of resources, but the company isn’t reusing byproducts of a manufacturing process.
  3. If no automobiles were discarded, there would be no metal. In other words, the company isn’t reusing an inevitable by-product.
  4. CORRECT. The company is optimizing its process by using the by-product of one process as raw material for another process.
  5. Here the inputs come from outside the company’s system.
