LSAT 108, Section 1, RC Passage 3, Corporate Profit

LSAT Preptest 108 explanations

RC Passage 3 Explanation

Paragraph Summaries

  1. Some critics think the idea of a corporation is morally flawed. Some economists argue we shouldn’t apply morality to economic decisions.
  2. Corporations are really just the aggregate of everyone who works for them and owns them.
  3. Economists argue a CEO should try to maximize profits. This will help society.
  4. Some profitable decisions will help a corporation but hurt society. A CEO isn’t excused from doing something morally wrong just because it is profitable.

Analysis

This passage is an argument. The author introduces both sides, and describes a corporation.

The author then gives a fair hearing to the economists. They’re allowed to make their argument at length.

This makes the author’s final argument against the economists even stronger. He disproves their specific claim that corporate profit will always help society.

The point of the passage was to argue against the economists.
