LSAT Preptest 108 explanations

RC Question 20 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The author thinks it would be wrong for a corporation to help itself but hurt the public.

(lines 42-46)

___________

  1. CORRECT. This is the best choice. Since polluting hurts the public, then polluting is morally wrong, even if it’s profitable.
  2. Wha? This would mean that murder is right, since you risk going to jail for committing murder.
  3. The author disagrees. The mill would not have been committing a crime to pollute, but the author still thinks polluting would be wrong.

    (lines 42-46)
  4. The author never said this is always wrong. They only said you shouldn’t maximize your personal benefit at the expense of others.

Also, maximizing profit and maximizing personal benefit may not be the same things.
  5. The author never said that every non-harmful act was not wrong.
