DISCUSSION: Lines 3-6 say why mathematics is a language.
It is a system of signs that have meaning, elegance and depth.
___________
- Metaphors are only mentioned on line 42. We’re never told that all mathematics convey meaning like metaphors, and whether that is enough to make something a language.
- CORRECT. Lines 3-6 say this directly. A language is a system of signs.
- The passage says mathematics (and language) do not correspond to physical objects and phenomena. See lines 21-24. The author agrees with this second theory.
- Actually, science confers explanatory power on math, once we agree what a mathematical statement means (lines 42-44).
- This may be true of the relationship between languages and things (lines 22-24). But no one has said this defines a language.
