It’s the conclusion of the passage. The author described Davis’ career in depth in order to support this conclusion. - Popular support and critical support are two different things. The author never mentioned whether the public liked Davis. We only know that critics were divided.
- This may not even be true. We only have evidence that Davis performed between 1948 and 1969. That’s a long time, but there may have been many other innovative styles before and after. Or even during. Davis surely wasn’t the only innovator alive during his career.
- We only have evidence that critics disliked Davis. See lines 5-6 and 57-58.
